The dangers of Vitamin D deficiency is critical for numerous healthy body functions. This vitamin is so ubiquitous, that many current researchers have discussed considering vitamin D as a hormone. Bone density deficiency (osteoporosis or osteopenia), mood disorders (anxiety or depression), fatigue, difficulty sleeping, brain fog, cardiac arrhythmia, cancer, weaken immune system function, severe asthma in children, and muscle aches are just a few health issues related to vitamin D deficiencies.
Our bodies do produce vitamin D, however this requires daily sunlight exposure to the skin. For those using sunscreens, or in regions with poor sunlight or individuals who avoid the sun, vitamin D deficiency is extremely common. Food sources of vitamin D include, cod liver oil, salmon, sardines and tuna. When considering some of these foods as a source of vitamin D, mercury toxicity must be considered. Another source of vitamin D is a nutraceutical D3 with K2. Dosage is specific and individual to patient needs. Other causes of vitamin D deficiency may include environmental toxic exposures, some medications and poor dietary and lifestyle habits.
According to a recent CDC report, roughly 3 out of 4 people in the U.S. have a significant deficiency of Vitamin D. This is also what I see in my clinic. Testing vitamin D should be part of a routine physical exam but far to often is not the case. When your physician does test for vitamin D, the lab guidelines are followed. In other words, while the conventional medicine recommended levels of vitamin D may range from 18-80 ( quite a disparity), the optimal levels are more like 80. Often I may see patients in my functional medicine practice taking vitamin D, however that may be taking a incorrect type of vitamin D or a incorrect dose for their needs.
